HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FIRST MEETING FOR 1912. The first meeting for 1912 of the Lower Jlutt Borough Council was held last evening, and wns attended by tho Mayor ('tfr. J'l. 1 , . liuiiuy) and Councillors Hob'b-j, Ball, Steven«on, Roofs, Clendou, Kemptiionic, Ilodyins, und Hawthorn. Mr. .!. Huck applied to have an ironpipe laid acro-.s tlio footpath to convey storm-water from his property—Granted", ■subject to applicant paying cost of layin?. The inspector reported oi.« case of scarlet fever in the borough. In reference to the agreement bet ween the council anil tho Wellington Kugby Union, tlio borough solicitor mote, stating that there was nothing in the agreement compelling tlio union to make a charge for admission to the Recreation Ground on seven days during any football season. There was only provision '"■giving the union permission to do k>." Councillor Ball said that the rent ought to bo raised, and other councillors concurred.—Received. Renewals of public hall licenses wore granted to the Church of Christ, St. James's Hall, and Knox Church and classroom. Some discussion took place in regard to granting the license to St. James's Church. The engineer stated that the authorities had not complied with the by-law referring to the way in which the.doors opened. Councillor Ball moved that the application bo declined, on the ground that tho controllers had had sufficient notice to comply with tho by-law. Councillor Clendon" moved as an amendment that the license bo granted for one month, and then, if the alterations wero carried out, the license could be extended to the lull torm. . "■ The amendment was carried. A ratepayer complained of an obnoxious odour in the vicinity of his premises. It was resolved that the inspector should visit the house, with a view. to minimising the nuisance, pending the construction of the sewage drain. The committee set up to inquire (in conjunction with several brigadesmen) into the working of the Fire Brigade, made the following recommendations:— (1) That the engineer report as to tho most suitable means of automatically ringing the Alicetown and the main bell at the same time. (2) That an additional hose reel with roller bearings be procured at a cost of £22. (3) That 500 ft. of hose Ix! purchased for use. with tlic'new reel. (4) That four respirators be obtained at aji estimated cost of 15s. nach. (5) That one dozen lace stockings be supplied at a cost of 2s. 6d. each. (6) That the engineer be instructed to appoint a man from time to time to look after tho gear in the fire station. (7) That 20 life-lines be granted. Councillor Clendon, on behalf of the sub-committee, stated that the cost of these acquirements would be about ,£SO, not including Clause 1. It w-as pointed \out that only .£25 had been placed on the estimates for tho fire brigade. In discussing the recommendations, councillors were of the opinion that Clauso 1 should stand over, and it was therefore struck out. Clauses 2,. 3, 4, 5, G, and 7 are to bo given effect to. Tho engineer submitted a report on current works and expenditures for same. ■It was. resolved to hold the next council meeting, on January. 29. Councillor Roots moved: "That the Telegraph Department bo asked to remove n telegraph, post in tho vicinity of the Railway Hotel." ■"■Jt was," said tho mover, "a menace to the. public.' , '—Carried. ■■. .■ : • GonnciMor Clendon was appointed to confer with a Petone representative in reference to the weekly half-holiday.
The engineer was instructed to purchase a centrifucral pump for the water supnly from'an Enirlish firm at a cost of JEI32 landed at Wellington. The. Mayor prave notice to move at the next mcetinc: "That this council approneh the River Board with a view fo vesting the powers of the board, and the control of the Hult liiver within its jurisdiction, in the Borough. Council." Councillor Uoots Rave notice to move:' "That the nccessary authorisation, ho Riven to chanuc tho namo of Alicetown to Southern Hutt."
