DAIRY HERD CULLS.

SCRUB COWS ON THE MARKET. At the conference of tho South Island . Dairy Association a discussion arose in regard to tho question of culling amongst cows. Several of the, delegates' maintained that instances were known where cows had failed to pass tho required test, and wero then put on the market and bought up, by other dairymen. Ono of tho delegates stated that he did not think anyone witli a little knowledgo of cows could make such a mistake. Mr. D. Cuddie, Director of the Dairy Produce Division of the Department of Agriculture, said that tho matter had not been brought under his notice, but ho thought that if the practice becamo common there would bo little difficulty in obtaining legislation to prevent it. Another of tho delegates stated later that lie did not think farmers paid enough attention to the breed of cows, and this was ono of Hie reasons why many of their cows failed to pass the required test. He had been in tho business for about twenty-five years, and his eows held the highest honours in recent tests. Ho attributed this to nn experiment of finding out for himself the best breeds to cross the herds with.. Ho had started with the Shorthorn, gone on to the Jersey, and finally tho Ayrshire, and he had obtained a lino standard of animals.
