RUMOUR ABOUT THE DARTFORD. A rumour in shipping circles is to'the effect, that tho Union Steam Ship Company is intending to convert their training shin Dartford into a coal hnlk. and to procure a larger and more modern sailing ship to take her place as a training school for future mercantile marine officers, rays the "Press." In the ?vent of this being decided upon, it is reported that the cadets at present serving their apprenticeship on the Dartford will he transferred for the time being to the company's big steamer Aparima, which is at present in Lyttelton discharging cargo from Calcutta, and which is to proceed shortly to Australia to load wheat for the United Kingdom or Europe. The vessel is expected to have completed discharge of her cargo of timber at Wellington to-day. She then leaves for Greymouth. Mr. Webb. Into second engineer of lbs Anchor Line's Wnimoa, is to leave Aiu-k----land to-day by tho Maheuo, en route for South Africa. The Union steamer Kaitnna left Westport at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, her destination being Fremantle. At 6.15 p.m. on Saturday the Scale? chartered sl-enracr Clan Maclarcn left Timani for Auckland, via Wellington. The vessel takes in bunker coal at this port, and then proceeds to Auckland with the balance of her cargo of timber 1500.000 feet). Discharge will be completed at the northern port. Contain D. Todd, late, of the Wanaka, is to take command of the Taluuc, relieving Captain 11. K. Smith. It is not anticipated that the dischargo of the P.uapeliu's London cargo will bo I'omplotcd before Wednesday. On that day it is hoped lo dispatch her for Lyttelton. The new steamer Opuri, which was built at Glasgow for Messrs. Reese Bros., of (."iiristchurch, and which is on her maiden voyage to Lyttelton, left Albany last Saturday, and is due at Hobart to-day. She will Jocrt hardwood at Hobart for Lyttelton, and after dit-eharging there will go into the. limber trade between Greymouth, Nydia Bay, and Lyttcltoii. Mr. Richmond, chief engineer of the Mokoia, went ashore at Dunedin this trip on a few days' leave, and Mr. Jas. Anderson, late second of the ATocraki, is actingchief of the vessel. Mr. A. Reid, late second engineer of the Waihora, is now second of the Mokoia. An arrival nl. Port Chalmers at 5 a.m. yesterday was the Union steamer Kanna-. The ves'e! brought down a cargo of kapok from Samarang, and called at Bunbury and Hobart en route. The Canterbury Steamship Company's steamer Pctone arrived at New Plymouth from Newcastle at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Mr. C. W. Croll, late third engineer of the Mokoia. has joined the Anarima, and Mr. C. J. Styche. late of the Whangape, is uow third of the Mokoia.
