NEW EMBROIDERY.

* Some effective fancy work, now much in favour, consists of black and whito embroidery, touched up with gold thread, on coloured, especially brown linen. This is to l)e seen un cushions, cosies, blotters, work tags, etc. Bold designs nro chosen, such as barley or oat stalks in black filoselle, with big daisies worked in whito with gold and black centres, or sprays of maideuhair with white roses apparently resting on them without leaves or stalks; trails of hops with with wild clematis and such like. There is always gold introduced to enliven the black and white. The cushions have thick black woollen cord, as a rule, edging them, tied in a loose bow ■or knot at one comer. Tho cosies are finished off in much the saiuo way with smaller cord, while blotters have a gold and black twisted cord looped on tho top near tho back. If not edged with cord, a black or a whito ribbon is passed up tho back and inside, and tied in a largo oow on the top. Many designs and 'articles will present themselves to inventive brains and busy hands. The linen used is rough surfaced. Other popular work of the day is arranging fancy tinsel passementerie and touching it. up with silks on satin for the sabretache bags. These are for day and evening wear.
