NEW ZEALANDERS MAY'QUALIFY. The following communication, received tt ol iV '-' 5 Excellency Vice-Admiral lCingHall, 'in regard to tho entry ns engineroom artificers in tho Royal Navy of a limited number of New Zealand-born subjects, is published for general information in this wcok's "Gazette" :— Powerful, at Auckland, No. 252. November 20, 1911. My Lord,—l have tho honour to forward herewith, for your Excellency's information, a copy of a letter which I have received fro n tho Admiralty with regard to tho entry as engine-room artificers in tho'Roval Navy of a limited number of New Zealand-born subjects; and .I would request that your Excellency will bo good Guonghto cause tho information contained thorein to bo promulgated in Now Zealand, observing that, as records applications for entry, any candidate should communicate with the senior naval officer, Noiv Zealand.—l have, ctc., G. ' bir-I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to inform you that they had had under consideration tho question of giving facilities for the entry as engine-room artificers in the Royal Navy of a limited number of New Zealand-born subjects, not exceeding twelve oach year, and with this object the following proposals have been made: (1.) Qualifications. All candidates to bo British subjects and to possess tho qualifications laid dowri in the king's Regulations and Recruiting Instructions. ■ They must bo prepared to servo in anv part of the world, and must sign tho usual Continuous Service Engagement for twelve years servicc. Men of colour not to bo accepted. (2.) Applications for Entrv. To bo addressed to somo central officer in Now Zealand, who would answer inquiries and take tho necessary preliminary action to ascertain tlio eligibility of ii candidate, etc. Applications woulil be forwarded to tho Captain in Charm, Sydney, in whose office a roster of applicants would bo kept, and by whom tlio necessary arrangements would bo made for entry. (3.) Examination.and Trade Test. To bo carried out preferably by tho Engineer Officer of ono of his Majesty's shins on the periodical visits to Now Zealand waters, or, failing such opportunity, at Sydney, by two Engineer Officers, or ono if two are not available. Similar arrangements to bo mode for tho medical examination, a preliminary examination being made by a local medical officer in tho case of candidate? proceeding to Sydney for examination for entry. Travelling expenses to Sydney to bo' allowed to candidates directed to procecd there for final entry. (4.) Disposal on Entry. It is suggested that when possible new entries should bo absorbed in vacancies on the station, or to relieve time-expired men, any in excess of such requirements being borno supernumerary pending vacancies in complement. They would be attached lo the port division of tho ship which they join, nnd on relief of the ship's company tliey .should accompany the rest of tho crow to England, unless retained for special reasons at tho discretion of the Commander-in-Chief.
