ARCHBISHOP CARR.

« APPOINTMENT OF A COADJUTOR, A meeting of the suffragan bishops of the Roman Catholic province of Victoria was held on January 4, at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, for the purpose of submitting to Ihc Holy See the names of three ecclesiastics for the position of coadjutor to Archbishop Cnrr, with the right of succession. Those present were Dr. lieville (Bendigo), ])r. Corbolt (Sale), and Dr. Higgins (ltnllur.it), and Archbishop Can- presided over the deliberations. Tho meeting was in private, and ■no announcement as to the result of the deliberations was made. The bishops will submit three names in the order of their choice, and these, accompanied by the recommendations of the priests, will bo forwarded to Kome. Whilst the recommendations at this stage are regarded as strictly confidential (says the "Argus"), indications point strongly to the name of the Might Rev. Daniel Mannix, D.D., president of St. Patrick's College, Jlaynuoth (Ireland). Dr. Mannix has occupied the position since 1803, and prior to that was professor of mental and. moral philosophy and professor of theology at the samo college. As his career indicates, Dr. Mannix has a considerable reputation as a scholar, and, in addition, is a commanding personality, who has exercised considerable influence in the counsels of the Church in Ireland, llfi has - been honoured at the Vatican with the title of monsignor, which was conferred upon him when lie was admitted as one of tho domestic prelates. Dr. Mannix is credited with having broad views in religious matters, and those who have had the privilege of meeting him trace a resemblance in his east of mind to that of Archbishop Carr. In 1910 Archbishop Carr was in Ireland, and it was then understood that the question of a successor who would adapt himself to Australian conditions was in his mind. Born in Charlovillc, Cork, in 1801, Dr. Mannix is 47 years of age. In his boyhood days he was a pupil of the Christian Brothers' School at Charleville, and his secondary education was conducted at St. Colman's College, Fennoy. The "Age" stales that the appointment may or may not be 'made by the Pope from the different names selected, lie has absolute discretion in tho matter. On the occasion of the appointment of Dr. Higgins as Bishop of llallarat, the priests of the dioceso selected Father Marshall first, Dr. Cleary (N.Z.) second, and Dr. Dclaney (now Archbishop of Tasmania) third, and yet, as tho result proved, none of them were appointed. Outside the archbishop, bishops, members of the diocesan council, and the irremovable priests of the archdiocese, none of the names arc known, but in well-informed Roman Catholic circles the prevailing opinion is that Dr. Mannix, Bishop of Mnynnoth, Ireland; Dean Phclan, of Melbourne; and Dr. Dwyer, Bishop of Mnitland; N.S.W., have, the best chances of receiving tho appointment.
