At an inquest on'the body of Leslie Augus, killed by the collapse of a hoardiii[j outside the new Post Office during a heavy jury returned a verdict of accidental death, expressing the opinion that (he accident resulted. from the violent nature of the weather. The jury added a rider that in the erection of hoardings , which are to remain for a considerable time the use of white pine should be discontinued.
DEPOSITIONS TAKEN. THE AFFAIR ON S.S. WAKATERE. Thames, January 9. In connection with the steamer Wakatere tragedy, whero oue lad shot another in the temple, tho depositions of the victim, who now lies in a precarious condition- in the hospital, were taken. Rowlands stated to the police that the shooting was quite accidental. Walding waa not in any way to blame. Tho latter came before the Police Court, charged with doing actual bodily harm, and was remanded ou bail, CAUGHT BETWEEN TRUCKS. Hokitika, January 9. A young man named Fred Thompson, aged 20 years, met with a serious accioent to-day at the Westland Sawmilling Company's mill at Flowery Creek. It appears that he was crushed between the buffers of two timber trucks, and he waa injured, internally, but the extent is not yet ascertaiuable, Tho unfortunate man. was brought into Hokitika for medical attention, where ho is progressing satisfactorily. RATHER SAD CASE. Gisbornc, January 9. An inquest was held to-day on the body of the young man, John William Wood, who was found dead in an outbuilding. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was duo to tho inflamed condition of deceased's loft lung, accelerated by tho • condition-of the internal organs. There was also evidence of extreme.alcoholic habits. It was stated that deceased—an accountant —was to have started w.ork that morning, but, after having a drink, returned to where he was staying, expressing, his determination to lio down. A verdict was returned in accordance with tho medical evidence. THE GOVERNOR INVITED. Gisbornc, January 9. A deputation waited upon the Borough Council last evening to ask the council to extend an invitation to' the Governor to lay the foundation-stone of the new Holy Trinity Church, at present building, and the council decided to communicato with Six James Carroll, and ask mm to extend an invitation to the Governor to visit the district.
GREY PORT FINANCE. .... _ , Greymouth, January 9. At the Harbour Board meeting held this evening the statement for the twelve months was submitted, and the chairman was congratulated on the very satisfactory position. The gross receipts for the year ended on Dcoomber 31, 1911, amountod to over .£41,000. When the present board took office in 1908 tho revenue was .£23,017 Os. Bd., and the revenue 6howed the substantial inoreaso in the two years since elapsed of ,£12,580 7s. Gd. During the year the board had received the first instalment of the consolidated loan (.£70,000), enabling No. 4 loan 0f,,£50,000 and a .Treasury advance to be paid off. Arrangements had also been made to exchange ,£50,005 debentures which' fell due on January 1, 1912, for an equal amount of consolidated debentures. The total loan liability.at the end of the year, after adding tho debit balance standing ngainst loan aocouat (and for which debentures had not yet been;raised), and deducting tho .accumulated sinking funds (estimated at X 48.000), was approximately ,£29,000. After providing for interest, sinking fund, and expenses of administration (estimated at ~£17,000),. there remained . a balance available tor the ordinary purposes of the board amounting to ,£18,600. Tho members of the board oongratulatod the chairman (Mr. Felix Campbell) on the excellent statement presented. Mr. Campbell stated that no other board in the Dominion could ehow such a satisfactory statement.

Mr. J. Brown, agricultural instructor to the South Canterbury Board of Education, resigned to-day, having accepted a post with larger remuneration' under the South , Australian Department (i Agriculture. A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. Dunedin, January 9. A six-year-old boy named M'Aiiley met with a serious accident at South Dunedin to-day. Ho was ringing behind a spring, cart which was going at such a pace that ho was swung off his feet- and one log got between the spokes of a wheel and was badly broken. The lad v,-as taken to the hospital and it is feared that the limb must be amputated.
LIGHTING OF THREE KINGS. _ • . Auckland, January 9. Replying to representations made by the Chamber of Commerce for the lighting of the Three Kings, tho Minister for Marino states that it has been decided to erect a lighthouse on tho North Capo, but thequcstiou of placing one on tho Three Kings requires further consideration, as there are various difficulties in the way. of putting a lighthouse and fogsjgnal on those islands, in such a position as would benefit passing vessels. Tho matter, however, will again bo very carefully gone into.
SENT TO GAOL. Auckland) January 9. For failing to provide for tho support of his wifo and children; Ernest Gallot was to-day sent to gaol for six months' ■hard labour. Tho wife stated that drink was tho cause of the trouble.
ANY AMOUNT OF TEACHERS. TJmaru, January 9. Tho shortage of teachers which a fort years ago was much felt in this district appears to have ten remedied. Tho board to-day received 77 applications for ton appointments, the number for each case ranging from ito 15. There were l<4 for secondary assistant at the Di& trict High School.
THE CRAIGIE GIFT. Timaru, January 9. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. Craigie) has handed ovor to ..tho Borough Council the last soction.of the aveuuo of trees begun in 1905, and planted by him, and fenced and maintained for three years. -A voto of thanks was passed- last night for the handsome present to tho town.
