Tho water tajik of a gasometer at; ItkcStone, Derbyshire, burst, mid tho gasometer collapsed, partially demolishing a row of collage?. A girl wag drowned and other persons injured. Tho gas ignited a second gasometer, which collnpred, doing great damage. (Ike. January P, 11.15 p.m.) London, January 9. Ilkstono was shaken like- an earthquake, end tho gasometer was flung thirty yards. Tho llamcs shot hundreds of feet in tho air. Tho occupants of tlio demolished cottages had miraculous escapes. Several buildings were burnt. The debris thrown on to tho railway caused suspension of traffic. It is believed that tho gasometer yielded to the pressure of water, thus causing tho gas to escape and ignite. Tho explosion burst tho water-holder, and the torrent flooded houses and factories.
