MISS SOPHIA JEX-BLAKE.
London, January 9. Miss Sophia Jex-Blake, Dean of the school ot Medicino for Women in Edinburgh, is dead.
Miss Sophia Jex-Blake, M.D., was tho youngest daughter of Thomas Jex-Blake, Proctor of Doctors Commons, and was born in January, 1810, iu Sussex. She was late attending medical officer of Edinburgh Dispensary and Cottage Hospital for Women and Children. la the year 1866 she began to Study medicine iu Boston, Tj.S.A under Dr. Lucy Sowall. Sho returned to England in 1868, and in 1569 matriculated in the Medical Faculty of tho University of Edinburgh. Not being allowed to complete her studies and tak6 degrees sho brought an action, with others, against tho University of Edinburgh in 1872 (which she practical gainod beforo Lord Ordinary Gifford, but o:i an appeal being made, the decision Was reversed by a. bare majority of tho whole Court Of hcssion in 1873. In the vcaf 1874 she founded tho London School of Medicine for Women, and iretircd from pachcft in 1899, and ' returned to her homo in Sussex. Amongst her publications were: "American Schools and Colleges, ' Medical Women," "Caro of Infants, etc.
