An important feature of the instruction oT ofijcers in field tactics is the staff ride, or "tour," as it is more generally termed. A general idea of attack and defenco ia laid down, and all tho detail work of field manoeuvres carried out on the ground, except that only the officers are present. There is no army. But the officers are required to see the army in their mind's eye, and to "appreciate situations," and issue "operation orders," as if their men were actually present. It is essentially an abstract proposition, but of great value as an intellectual exercise. Towards the end of the present month a staff tour is to be held at Otaki, and tho. Training BrancJi at General Headquarters is now at work on the dfr tails of the scheme.
