MASTERTON NOTES
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, January 8. A good deal of local interest is centred in tho Wellington wool sales, which open this week. Tho interest is on account of the large entry of Wairarapa wool. The police seized a. quantity of liquor on Saturday night, and another charge of a breach of tho Liceusing Act is to be preferred against a local resident. The hay crops in the Mnstcrton district this year are heavier than usual. The large rainfall has resulted in a prolific growth of grass. At the monthly meeting of stewards of the Masterton Racing Club, held on Saturday last, it was reported that a loss of •C 33 had been made on the recent raco meeting. The president remarked (hat they were evidently working for the Government, which made a profit of .£l3l from the totalisator tax. The telephone exchange in Masterton has now i£2 subscribers, and there are also a largo number of subscribers on private lines. A social gathering is to be held on Thursday evening next by local supporters of the Reform party. The schedules for the Masterton A. and P. Association's next show, to bo held on February 20 and 21, were issued today. Messrs. C. 1\ Tallancc and A. C. Pilmer, of Mastorton, will act as judges of light horses at tho Dannevirko Show. Mr. E. M. Bannister will judge tho dairy cows, and Mr. Bland Rayner tho Lincoln sheep. Numerous sports gatherings aro lo be held in this district during the current month. The Langdalo gathering takes place on Thursday next.
