PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

QUENCHLESS MILITARY SPIRIT. ■ (From Our Special Correspondent.) _ . ■ ' Palmerston, January 8. With a view to making the pri>granuno more attractive to the public, the management of the , military tournament have set up a sub-committee, comprising liieutenant-Golonel l'migle, Captains White and Jickell, Lieutenant Smith, and Staff-Sergeants Dovey and Nicholls, to revise ths schedule for next year. It is recognised that, although tho 'programme as at present arranged, is of interest to those connected with military matters, it is not so attractive as it might be to the public, and it is proposed to endeavour to make the gathering one that will draw all classes of the community. The alteration in the system of military training was rather unsettling this year, but it is felt that, by the time that the next tournament conies round, the new system will have been got into proper working order, and will be of assistance in promoting (he tournament. At the same timo one other word is due, and it is short and well deserved. They seem to be quenchless enthusiasts —these PalmcrstoL military people.

An alarm was sounded on the fire bell about six o'clock last evening, but it proved to be only a grass fire iu Cuba Street. The fire brigade was qnickly on the spot, and, soon removed a.ny danger., With the hot weather which has now set in, however, vegetation will soon become inflammable, and grass fires may be looked for. .

There were sixteen bankruptcies in the Palmerston district (extending from liarton to ■\Vaika.nae) during the year just closed. To eleven of these orders of immediate discharge were granted. At the regular monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association on January 16, a proposal will lie made (by a number of poultry fanciers) to come to an arrangement to run a. poultry show by a poultry society, at the next National. Dairy Show in 'June.. It appears that it is necessary to hare a separate poultry society before the New Zealand championships can bo competed for here, ant! it is hoped that an arrangement can be come to with the A. and P. Association to run a poultry exhibition on somewhat similar lines' to that'. of the Manawatu Kennel Club, which holds its annual show of dogs at the spring show of the A.,and P. Association. Some of the finest poultry shows of the Dominion have been held at Paltucrston, and the present movement is to revive the interest in poultry breeding. There are finite a large number of fanciers in the Palmerston district anxious to, assist in the movement, and, if an amicable arrangement can be made with' the A. and P. Association, it •is felt that there will be little difficulty in getting just as good exhibitions of poultry as were held hero in former years. A young lady, riding through Bourke Street last evening, was thrown from her horse through: the nnimal taking fright. She received a wound on the head through contact with the road, but was able to continue her journey after tho injury had bten dressed. The Palmerston Brass Band rendered a splendid programme of music in the Esplanade yesterday afternoon, Mr. Berryman conducting. Beautiful weather prevailed, and a very large crowd of people assembled. Curator Black has tho Esplanade in capital order, and the promenades by tho river banks, in the cool shade of the native bush, were appreciated.

Tho district nnrse, Sister Lonergan, has returned from her furlough, and has resumed duty.

Saturday was a splendid day for outside games.. On the Palmerston bowling green several rink and pairs games were played in connection with the club tournament, and there was a large number of players at the Terrace End green, the tennis courts there also beint; fully occupied. Cricketers held practices at the sports gTound, but there wore no regular matches.

Farewell services in connection with the departure of Adjutant Haywood, of tfto Salvation Army, wore held yesterday, the evening meeting boing crowded. 'A number of the officers and several members of the Army spoke of tho work of Adjutant Haywood during his term in Palmerslon. He will be accorded a public farewell at' tho barracks to-morrow evening, when Mr. D. Buick, M.P., tho Mayor, and other citizens will bo present. Heloavcs for Auckland on Wednesday. The Rov.
