At a meeting of workers at tho Thames ironworks, it was resolved not io work 53 hours weekly. • - It was announced in a cablegram dated December 29 that the Admiralty had entered into negotiations with a Northern shipbuilding firm for the construction on' tho Thames of two protected cruisers and their engines, Iho cost of wages representing approximately that for tho construction of a battleship. The final decision was dependent on an arrangement being como to between the. Northern firm and the Thames workmen. The contract would not bo accepted except on tho basis that the same hours should be worked as are worked by the men of other competitive firms, namely, a fifty-three instead of a forty-eight-hour week. Mr. "Will Thorne, Labour M.P., interviewed, said he objected to the latter condition.
