The Harbour Board last evening referred to the Works Committee for consideration a scheme submitted by their engineer (Mr. C. H. Howorth) for n small extension of. the present scheme of works prior to undertaking the proposed big scheme, later on. The engineer suggests an extension of the north mole by 220 feet, and of the. south mole by ISO feet, together with the lengthening of the internal training wall and the rnising of both moles to full-tide level. The estimated cost is .£B6OO which is to be paid for out of loan money still unexpended. ■Reporting on harbour. progress for the month of December the engineer stated that the exceptionally heavy weather which .bad prevailed during the month had done no damage whatever to the moles, although it had proved, the severest scries of storms experienced during the year. He'thinks that this can bo taken as an indication ,that" the Works will withstand anything in the shape of weather likely to occur on this coast. Neither had the weather affected the deplh at the entrance which still remains at 21ft. at high springs, though the deepest part of the channel has sniffed slightly (o the southward. .
