FIRES.
FRUIT SHOP GUTTED. (Hi Teleerapb.—Pross Association.! i Invercargill, January 5. Shortly after midnight, a fire gutted the fruit shop of Mrs. Weir, in Dee Street, and damaged the stock of J. Spratt, Bailraaker. The building, belonging to E. S. Perry, was insured for ,£3OO in tho New Zealand office, Mrs. Weir's stock for £200 in tho Australian Alliance, and Spratt's for ,£l5O in tho Alliance and .£IOO in tho Norwich Union. Mrs. AVeir's loss is about £100 and Spratt's .E2OO. TWO MAORIS BURNED TO DEATH. Tauranga, January 5. An old Maori couple named Tehiriri Tawaha and Pare Kahakaha were burned to death in a wharo at Matakana Island on Tuesday night. Tliero is lio clue as to thn origin of the fn'e.
