THE TITULAR CHURCHES OF THE NEW CARDINALS.
Tho "Catholic Times" of November 24. states:—Nearly all the .titular churches for tho new Cardinals were chosen by. tho Holy Father during the past week; To tho Archbishop of Paris has been assigned the title of Cardinal-Priest of St. Sabina on the Aventine Hill, from which church Cardinal Mathieu took his title. In accordance with tho tradition of ages, tho great Franciscan church of Ara Cooli, which is served by tho Friars Minor, has been chosen for the Most Rev. Archbishop Falconio; while tho Dominican church of St. Maria in Minerva has been selected for the Archbishop of New York; the third American Cardinal, the Archbishop of Boston, receiving the ancient St. Calisto as his titular church. St. Pulentiana, at tlie foot of the Esquilino Ilill, from which Cardiual Wiseman took his title, has been assigned to the Most Rev. Dr. Bourne, Archbishop of Westminster. This is supposed to be the most ancient of all the churches of Kome, being built on tho site of tho- mansion of Senator Pudens,. who here'gave hospitality to St. Paul and. became a Christian, with his whole family, in 41 A.D. Treating of this rolic of Apostolic days, Lanciani says: "Hero the first converts met for prayers; here Putlentiana, Praxedes, and Timotheus, daughters and son of Pudens, obtained from Pius I.the institution of a , regular parish assembly ("titulus"), . provided with a baptisriial font; and here, for a long time, were preserved some piooes of household furniture which had .been used by St.' Peter. The tradition deserves attention because it was openly accepted at the beginning of the fourth century." To Dubillaixl, Archbishop of Chambrey, has been assigned the Church of St. Susannah: to the Bishop of Montpellier that of St. Maria della Vittoria-, which was the titular church of the lato Cardinal del Drago; to Mgr. Bisleti, Mnjordorao of the Vatican, St. Agatha del Gothi, which is attached to the Irish College.
