PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent,) Palmerston N., January 5. The Borough Council expects to receive the report of Mr. Black, olectrical engineer, on a tram system for Palmerston 111 about ten days, when it is presumed that a meeting of ratepayers will be called to further consider the matter. •Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows M.U., met last night, N.G. Bro. W. C. Dudley in tho chair. Tho balance sheet and auditor's report, showing tho lodgo to be in a splendid financial position, wero read and adopted. Tho balance to the credit of tho sick and funeral fund now stands at ,£4160. At tho conclusion of the business a euchre tournament was held, Bro. F. Mowlem proving tho winner. Mr. G. Hirsch has been renominated for the position of parents' representative on the High School Board of Governors. Nominations close on January 15, and the election, if necessary, takes placo on January 24. Tho Defence Department has reopened tho local offices after the holidays, and a busy time is anticipated getting the various units into shape. Tho district orders are now being issued for work for tho current month. At a meeting of the committee of tho Manawatu Horticultural Soci»ty last night, it was decided to hold the chry. sonthemum show in May. Returus show that tho passenger traffic at the Palmerston station during the Christmas holidays was not nearly so great as the same time last year. The falling off is accountcd for by the inclement weather which prevailed. Mr. J. Gilruth, erstwhile Chief Vetcrinnrian, has been ou a visit to Palmerston.
