Tongariro and Ngauruhoe they did in" the one day, leaving Ruapehn to ■be take'n in a somewhat more leisurely fashion. Ngauruhoe, needless to say, greatly impressed them- with its cloudlike sulphur fumes, its muttenngs and its weird shaking and trembling, and it was with distinct feelings, of relief on the part of sninc of the members of the expedition that tbe lower levels were regained. Till it has been experienced few people can imagine the curious, uncanny sensations th.it arc caused by feeling (lie solid ground constantly shivering and trembling beneath the foothold, and by the realisation of the caged forces that aro fighting- for releasfi'nol so far below. The views obtained from tho.mountain tops were magnificent, the whole sweep of thn country lyins outspread below them for miles with that most beautiful o' , nil mountains, Egmont, visible in tho far distance. As might be itnasined, tho atmosphere, with snow lying all. around, was distinctly cold, which was, considering the arduous climbing that lay before the party, a somewhat advantageous factor. The beauties of the Blue and Green Lukes were most enthusiastically spoken of, ami it was with the keenest feelings of satisfaction at having visiter! . and climbed such interesting , places that themembers of the party retraced their ways, returning (o their destinations on Wednesday last.
