AT MARTON. Our travelling correspondent writes: The non-ringing up of some totalisntor figures in the Dash Handicap on the first day of the Marton meeting aroused comment. Tho race,- which was the last on the programme, was won by Ineuru,. which paid the biggest dividend of the meeting, he public made a computation on the aggregate totals showed on tho three machines, and proved on the figures that tho dividend should have been nearly 50 per cent, more than, was being recorded on the blackboard. Tho machines, however, closed down kte, and, when the raco was about, to start, thero was a sum of JlloC still to be rung on, and it is understood that the law does not allow any "ringing up" while a raco is in progress. Of this ,£156, "the! sum of £t0 was" on tho winner, and the dividend was accurately recorded on the blackboard. The public is naturally suspicious on a racecourse, and in order to obtain . a plain statement of tho facts, the writer asked Mr. Spriggins, who was in charge of the totalisator, to give his version of tho all'air. •
Mr. Sprigging said that lie would do so with pleasure. There, wore, he said, three machines, one of which was "silent" i.e., no bell was sounded whon money was rung; on this totalizator. Six receiving windows were for the reception of money, on the silent ■totalizator, and,-in orderto have everything clear, this machine was to be Closed dowa before the.advertised time, of staging.r><H -i''.;:;, ,i*.vi ;■■ 'I The public, however,' were slow 'in coming in with' their money. It was a big j betting race, and, in some way, the ringing up.bells of the other machines got.mixed. Whetr-'the. race started, there'was still <£>!0 to go on to Ineuru, and £2a on the other horsjs, all on the silent machine, and .£ll6 on different horses on the two remaining machines. The figures were entered itf tho books of tho club at the time in tho presenco of Messrs. Goodall, of Bulls, Sicely, totalisator clerk, Naylor, Cannons, 'and Howarth, and two stewards of tho club, and satisfaction was expressed by the officials of the club that thero had been no wrongdoing. ■ '■" ■ r . . Mr. Spriggins's explanation is no doub,t correct, and the trouble seems to have, been caused through the use of comparatively effete totalisator machines,. not in proper order, and intensified by the fact Jh.it money was being put on till the last moment. On tho big machines the .£156 could have been recorded silently, and very quickly, but, on the contraption at Marton, the aggregate could have been increased only by an incessant "tinga-ling," which would possibly not have finished till after the race had ended, and which would undoubtedly have provpked a strong outcry from the always suspicions public. In some way, however, thn public should have been informed of the proper aggregates on tho various horses, and racing clubs are only acting in their own interests, ami the interest of racing generally, if they properly guard against all chances nf misconception on Hie part of the people whose money keeps the sport alive. It was in the Tower Handicap (a high-weight race) at Leopardstown, and he carried list. 91b Previous to winning the Viceroy's Cup last year he. won a hurdle' race at Calcutta. The Victory (son of Tho Admiral) from Cco-ee, by Trenton from Lady Sterling, by Silver. Mr. Lionel Robinson bred Last Call, and J. E. Brewer trained him in England.
