— o . ALFRED TENNYSON DICKENS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, January i. Advices liave- been received here of the death in New York, where ho v.as on a lecturing tour, of Alfred Tennyson Dickens, sou of the novelist. Mh Dickens was for many years a resident of Australia.

New York, January 3. Alfred Tennyson Dickens Is dead. He had an acute attack of indigestion during his lecturing tour. He was tal:en ill on Monday night at a lecture hall, and removed to an hotel. ADMIRAL EVANS. . (Rec. January 5, 0.35 a.m.) Washington, January 4. Tho death of Admiral Evans, from acute indigestion, is announced. "Fighting Bob" Evans was born in Virginia iu 1846, and became an ensign, in (ho United States Navy at the age of 17. He reached his final rank .of rearadmiral in 1901. In the course of his career he saw a good deal of active service, and received severe vroumls. It was while in command of Yorktown at Valparaiso, Chile, in 1891, during tho period of strained • relations between Chile and the United States, that his actions earned him his popular namb of "Fighting Bob.'.' In the war with Spain h« commanded the lowa in Sampson's fleet, off Santiago, and took an active part in the battle with Cervera's fleet, July 3, 1898. Ho was Commander-in-Chief of the Asiatic Station, 1902-4, and commanded the Atlantic Fleet from 1904 to 1907. When the fleet started on the world tour (1907-8), in the course of which it visited New Zealand, "Fighting Bob" commanded it until it left the Pacific Coast, when he handed it over to RearAdmiral Sperry. Admiral Evans retired in 1908. He published his reminiscences in 1901, under the title of "A Sailor's Log." ME. LEWIS HIDDLE. Melbourne, January i.
