♦ . NEW RULE MADE. THE CSUAX ARBITRATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Cliristchurch, January 4. The principal provisions in the award of the Arbitration Court in the. tramways dispute arc as follow:— Minimum wages.—Motormcn under one yenr's service, Is. OJd. per hour; over one year, Is. 11<1.; over two years, Is. l}d.j over three years, Is. 2Jd. Conductors, under one year's service, UUI. per liouri over oiie year, and under Hires years, Is.; over three years, Is. OJd. It is provided that the promotion of motonnen and conductors from one rate of pay to another nliall be subject in nil cases to the record of an employee being satisfactory to tho board, and that tho board shall have the right to disrate any lnotorman or conductor whose record is unsatisfactory, but not so unsatisfactory as to warrant dismissal. In these matters tho board shall be the sole judge, subject to the right of appeal conferred by the Tramway Amendment Act, 1010.
Wages of Other Employees. Care equipment adjuster, Is. 2d. per hour; car cleaners, car greasers, and shed hands, Is. and (when working on night shift) Is. OJd.; leading linemen, Is. 3!d.j assistant linemen, Is. 2t1.; track cleaners, Is.; permanent day men, Is. Id.; horsedrivers, Is.; power-house firemen, greasers, and handy-men, Is. Id.; all other workers Is. , Workers Under 21. Minimum wages, under and up to 18 yeurs, 10s. per week; ](j to 17' years, 135.; l< to IS year?, jCI; IS to 19 v<?.irs, £1 5=.; 19 to 20 years, .£) 10.?.; 20 to 21 year?, i ii ,s l )rovi(lc d that this scale snail not apply.to molormen, conductors, oi apprentices, and that the proportion ot youths employed shall not exceed one youth to every thrco men, or fraction of three. Hours of work and overtime.—Eight hours per day on week days, but the employer shall have tho right to call for one hour more at ordinary rales; All tiino worked over nine hours, in any one week day, shall bo paid for at time and a half rates. All time, worked on Christmas Day and Good Friday shall be paid for at double rates. All time worked- on Sunday t-hall be paid for at time and a half rates.
Time Allowances. Motorm«n taking a car out of the shed, 10 minutes; bringing tho car into the shed, 10 minutes; joining car on road, ,j minutes; leaving car on "road, 5 minutes; conductors taking car out of shed, 1(1 minutes; joining car on road, 10 minutes; leaving car on road and not paying in, 5 minutes; leaving car on road and paying in, 10 minutes; bringing car to shed,'and not paying in, 5 minutes. Appointments. When any appointments are mode ta the service of tho board, preference shall be given to employees in the departments concerned, subject, however, in all cases, to seniority, suitability, capability, and .tlie record of the employee concernedmatters of which the board shall bo sole judge, subject to the right of appeal conferred l>y the Tramways Amendment Act, 1910. Nothing in this clause shall prevent the board from engaging, as motormen, mon who hold certificates qualifying them to drive the board's steam locomotives, but who are not, at tho time of such engagement, in tho employ (f the board, but such uppoinhnents shall not l>e made if there are, at that time, a sufficient number of motormen in the employ of the board who hold such certificate.
A preference clause is included, and pr<* vision is made for holidays to employees who have been in the board's employ for twelve months consecutively, such to receive eight consecutive week days as holi* days;, .annually,. ■ ■
Memorandum. A memorandum attached to the award states that, in , making , this award, , the. Court has taken into consideration' agreements recently made in connection with the tramways in Auckland, Wellington, and Duucdin. Obligation, with regard to providing work for employees, is that laid down by the Court iii connection with the Auckland award (Book, of Awards, Vol. .!), page 750). This decision was given in I'M, and, since then, fresh agreements hitvo been made in Auckland, Wellington, and Duncdin. On the basis there laid down it appeared to the Court that, in ttlia respect, tramway workers in, Christchurch should be put in the same position as the tramway workers in other centres.
The award is to expire on January 15, 1814.
