NEW AUCKLAND-SYDNEY CABLE.
SURVEYING THE ROUTE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, January 1. jV survey of the route for the direct cable between Auckland and Sydney will bo commenced within ii fortnight. The work will bo done by the stall' of the Pacific Cable Board, and the repair steamer Iris \\;ill bn used for thn purpose. 'Hip scheme adopted by the Pacific Cable Board and approved -by the Australian and New . Zealand Legislatures comprises the linking of Auckland and Sydney by a cable, with its operative terminals iii the. chief telegraphic office in ench city. At this end the cable will bo brought' ashore a short distance, to the north of Mamikau Harbour.
The survey will occupy a fortnight or three weeks. The. Iris will be. provisioned for a mouth, aud, commoncinj! at Jlamikau Heads, she will work steadily across to Sydney. • ■ • ;:.'.''.'■'-''■''.
