Quiln a large number of passengers were no! allowed on the first express from Auckland lo Wellington, on account of it being so crowded, and were made lo wait for tlio second train, only to find that (his was in a still more congested condition. A number of extra carriages were attached, making it about the. longest passenger train that has left the station. But, even with the extra carriages, there was only standing-room for many people. The trains leaving for other parts were equally crowded. One reason for the crowds travelling yesterday was tlio fact that it was tho last day oii which excursion tickets were issuable.

Mr. J. Ellis, of Palmerston, who has just returned from a trip to tho'.Old Country, was entertained by a number of friends last evening, the Mayor presiding. The health of the guest of the evening was toasted, and Mr. Ellis gave an interesting account of his travels. ' ( An effort is being made to form a Political Labour Party in Palmerston. A draft of a constitution and platform is being prepared, and is to be submitted to a meeting in the course of a'few days. The position of patron to thc.Ma.nn-' watu Rifle Association has been accepted by General Godley.

At the Police Court to-day an old offender named Leonard M'Kenna was sentenced to a month's hard labour on a charge of vagrancy. •A bolt occurred at Awapuni this morning. A horse' in a trap took fright at" a passing train, and, swerving off the- road, threw the occupants, including two ladies, out of the vehicle, but fortunately they escaped with a few bruises. ■ Tho horse got away with the trap, and galloped right into Palmerston, about .two miles, before it was stopped. The trap Was a good deal damaged. Forty-one patients were admitted to the Palmerston Hospital during the month of December. There are now <36 patients in the. institution.
