An event which created some little interest at Island Bay during the latter part of the holiday season was the "floating, in" of tho RaehuUii, a big launch which has been built by Messrs. YVells and Shovcland. The boat i> easily the biggest which has been constructed at, Hand Bay. It is a rr.omy craft of handsome lines, and will be propelled by two eight-horse power engines, driving twin screws. Tho builders, who have devoted their time during the last three years to the task of building the boat, intend to use her as a. yacht. She i? big enough lo cross the Strait or make any similar voyage in almost any weather, and a roomy cabin affords a comfortable- shelter for her crew. The job of getting the boat down from Derwent Strrot, where she was: built, to the irater proved somewhat difficult. A start was made on Tuesday, and most of the mole residents in tho vicinity turned .'out to-lend ii.lf.tno The boat was drag!ged alo'ng-'o'n a cradle mounted on'trucks. All went smoothly until it came to turning the corner into the main street. At this point, however, the low-rope broke. Eventually the" Raeh-itai was safely deposited- at low-water mark on the beach near the men's bathing shed, but. the greater part of the. day. was.spent in getting her there. At 1 o'clock yesterday 'morning, when lln tide had risen sufficiently.- she was safely floated off into ber proper element. Despite the lateness of the hour, nearly a. hundred spectators had assembled to see the lauueh and these sent up a. stentorian 'cheer as the final difficulties of getting the boat clear of her cradlo were overcome and she floated clear. Police in Ireland ,vrr f.rmed with rifle, sword, and pistol.
