He was accused of taking up an over-confident attitude,- particularly in agreeing to allow the Imperialists to retire thirtythree miles. The Empress Dowager's three million taels, sufficient to pay the troops for six weeks, were given after Yuan Shih Kai threatened to resign. The Manchu Princes havo received a threatening communication from fifteen prominent generals, who demanded substantial contributions to the Imperial troops, SUN YAT SEN. WESTERN CALENDAR ADOPTED. Melbourne January 3. The Young China League has received a cablegram confirming the news of the appointment of Dr. Sun Yat Sen as President of the Chinese Republic. The republic'has adopted the Western nations' calendar, dating the birth of the ,yea'r from January 1.
