Mr. Reed, second officer of the Monowai. leaves the vessel on arrival at Dunodin this trip, and goes on holiday leave. Subsequently Mr. Eeed proceeds to the Old Country for a trip. Messrs. 0. Keefe, S. Mahood, and J. Qroy. who signed on the Mokoia as extra officers for her excursion to the Marlboroueh Sounds, left the vessel at Wellington yesMr. F. A. Oiarltc, fourth officer of the Mokoia, joins the Kurow at Auckland thia trip. : About two months ago.the Union Company 3 steamer Kaiapoi, when off Newcastle Heads, New South Wales, lost a lifebuoy overboard. A few days ago a traveller along the, beach between Hokitika and Grcymouth picked up a lifebuoy with the above steamer s name upon it. On inquiry at Greymouth it was elicited that the steamer lost one as stated above, and there is every probability that the buoy picked up near tho Kapitea Creek is the ono lost when off Newcastle. The buoy must have travelled fairly fast to tho New Zealand coast to do the journey of 1200 odd miles in about six weeks , time.
