Dr. and Mrs. O'Brien, of Chrislchurch, have left on a year's visit to the Old Ccuntry. Mr. T. K. Harty, who has been spending Christinas and New Year "with his son, Dr. Harty, returned to Dunedin by the Mararoa Inst night (Tuesday). AH the Ministers arc in town except the Hon. A. T. Ngata, who is at Port Awanui. Mr. ,Ins. Allen, member for Bruco, arrived in Wellington from the south yesterday morning and left again on his'return last evening. Our Hastings correspondent telegraphed last evening: A well-known resident, Mr. Cornelius O'Donoghue, died to-day. The deceased, who was 51 years of age, lad been lor five years licensee of the Albert Hotel. ' Prior to this, ho was connected with the Bailway Hotel at Port Aliuriri, and the Provincial Hotel, Xapier. A fortnight, ago he was seized with a paralytic stroke, from which ho never recovered. Colonel Allen Bell, of Waikato, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. G. L. Peterson, touring manager for Messrs. Wirth Bros., has arrived in Wellington to make arrangements for a short circus season, opening on Monday, ■January 15,
The Rev. Georgo Grubb, the well-known missioncr, who held a very successful mission, in New Zealand and Australia twenty years ago, has, in company with Mr. G. Ernest Jackson, been taking part in a convention in the South Island during the holiday season. lJoth gentlemen arc due to arrive in Wellington this morning by tho Lyttelton stoamer and to lenvo for Sydney on Friday. They will bo staying with Captain Blackburne. Madame Emily Spada (Mrs. Philip Aewbury), the accomplished soprano vocalist, is duo to arrive from Sydney by tho Ulimaroa to-day. With Mr. Sewbury, slie will appear at a concert to bo given in Auckland on Saturday next. Mr. H. Haerle, of Stuttgart, Germany, who has already spent some time in visiting various parts of tho Dominion, arrived in Auckland on Saturday from Hotorua. Mr. Haerle will leave for Wellington shortly. Mr. H. U. M. Haszard, F.R.G.S., chief draughtsman for the Canterbury district, te been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor for the \Vcstlnnd district. Mr. Hnszard is to bo succeeded in Canterbury by Mr. Price, chief draughtsman in Hawk'e's Bay, and •Mr. 1. A. Thomson, chief draughtsman at Hokitika, bueceods Mr. Price. Mr. Edward Hartley, an alderman of the city of Bradford, England, and a well-known Socialist, is a visitor to Auckland.
