NEW HAT PINS.

A very great many women who recognise their duty toward their neighbour are having their hat pins shortened, says an Australian, writer. There, is scant probability that the very long hat pin will ever bo needed again. Milliners and other experts doubt if it ever was needed. The pinning of tho hair below tho hat brim firmly to the hat does more, toward keeping the !;at in position than any amount of promiscuous driving of pins through the crown. Tho newest hat pins are many, inches shorter than their dangerous predecessors, and are many of them marvels of beauty and ingenuity. Tho majority is embroidered, and circles and ovals two to fivo inches across are often found to bo merely tho heads of hat pins. All sorts of beautiful stitcliery are used in the production, of those pin heads, but nothing is more delightful to do, or more effective when done, than bead embroidery. As a foundalion to this a very fine huckaback has much to recommend it. Ono of the most attractive Christmas presents seen this season was two hatpins with large, Hat, oblong heads 'embroidered in mole-colour-ed silk and ■'■turquoise bine beads. Tho foundation of this embroidery was found to be huckaback, the whole thing being made up in very stiff cardboard, through which an ordinary black headed hat pin had been run previously to tho final covering with the embroidered material.
