BRIGHT AND BREEZY.WEATHER : ' STIFF'NORTH-WESTSELy~" ": • At any rate,, the weather was bright yesterday. After so much rain and Bloomy skies, that concession was one holiday-makers were grateful for. It enabled them to .get out and. about, to breathe ozonous breezes at the. seaside, and seek shady nooks in vernal spots "far from the madding crowd." Throughout the day a stiff north-westerly gale raged without cessation, raising clouds-of dust in the city and a considerable sea on the harbour. These conditions limited 'pleasuring/in certain directions,.while>it did not prevent it. V It is due to "Wellington to get a little real summer now. WORKING MEN'S'.CLUB PICNIC.; The annual picnic in connection with the Petone 'Working Men's. Club was,held at Day's Bay yesterday, and was responsible for 'an attendance of about a thoun/ind merry-makers. The windy weather did not mar tho day's outing, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, particularly the youngsters, who all received a toy. ■ The results of tho various -. sporting events were as follow:—Club handicap, •three distances '(100,-'2OO, and. 300 yds.): "Whitley, 1; F. Married ladies' race:. Mrs. Jones.'!; Mrs. Smith. 2. The officials were: Handiciinper, Mr. B. Brown; judge. Mr. Arnold; starter, Mr.Grenoungh; picnic secretary, Mr. Parsonage... .. . ...,"\V. '':', holiday traffic;' .'•': by: railroad and tramway A strong wind mado things somewhat unpleasant in the city yesterday,,..and possibly this explains why traffic on tho tramways was-light, so far almost routes are concerned, though passenger bookings bv rail, woio fairly heavy. 'Tho passenners who travelled ! yesterday, to stations between Wellington and Paekakariki numbered 1250, and those who travelled beyond Paekakariki totalled 750. About two thousand people travelled to stations between Wellington and Unper Hult, and stations bevond Upper Hutt attracted about 700 holiday-makers.' The only tramcars which carried a heavy loading' werethose connecting-with trains and steamers. .
