BOWLS TOURNEY.
WELLINGTON CENTRE'S ANNUAL CARNIVAL. WIND V. BIAS. TJie annual tournament of the Wellington Bowling Centre peopled the city greens with', a small army of lighthearted flannel-clothed bowlers yesterday.' The weather was, far from being perfect, of even favourable, for such air important event, for, though the sun shone out brightly until towards evening, the wind blew "big guns" from the north-west during the whole of the. day, and there were occasions, as many an honest bowler is aware,-when it absolutely took charge of the game, and, despite the ."windage" allowed by the grey-heads, played pranks with the bowls which no one could foresee. Not infrequently a bowl would run absolutely against* the bias,, and yoer off to a corner 'of the green, where it was not the slightest value to its owner or his "skip." Then again one would be sent up that Jooked as proper a bowl as one would see- in a summer's day, but the frolicsome gale would chase it' up quite maddeninglv to tho ditch. Still, tho bowlers were keen enough, and took a special delight in the queer reversals of rinks on their paper form. Four games of 16 heads each were played yesterday, on the Wellington, Thorndon, Victoria, .Newtown, and Kelburne greens, and another four will be played to-day, bringing the end of the section play to a close. ■ ' THE RINKS.
