FASCINATING VOLUME OF STATISTICS. The annual volume of London statistic, issued by the County Council, collates onco more the amazing array of figures, presenting every phase of metropolitan life in tabular form (says the London 'Daily News"). Perhaps iu 110 other form than this volume of over 600 pages of tables does the immensity of- London ■so impress itself on the miiid. The total number of off-licensed houses was 2450. Since the Licensing Act, 1001, came into operation, 4£>3 on-licenscs have been extinguished, the average amount of compensation awarded being .£2318. The work of tho detcctivo foroo is shown in the fact that 10,945 persons were arrested by such officers. "Fingerprints" wero responsible for the detection of 99C0 persons. -In tho eourso of their duties tho police seized 40,255 dogs, stopped 271 runaway horses, attended 2029 fires, found 27,364 windows or doors open, restored 11.570 people to their friends, and took 12,958 people to hospital in conserjueuco of accidents, etc. Children on the rolls in elementary schools on March 31, 1910, numbered 739,607. There are in the free libraries under (he various London municipalities 7,803,12-1 bonks, as compared with 3,808.671 ii'i 1597-S.
