THREE RECORDS BROKEN
■finality; in" the Australasian amateur athletic championships wa sreaohod-yes-terday. . Capital, athletic weather, and drying tracks ' were-' {Ho, features; and. some 3000 people looked on.. The events were got off;, in fair time—which means, somewhat behind so far as tho competitor -concerned;, things-'.w*ra-well ordered enough; but the- public; were not nearly sd. welt catered for-, as. on the' previous , -.ttsy. . • ■ • . . : The main trouble was that tho inner ring, usually, reserved solely for people, who are doing Something ..either, a≤ competitors or officials, was overrun by people who appeared to have nothing whatever to do.- The conse(i uenco was that they were J continually in the way of those who had work on hand, and the effect on-.tho officials was ; demoralising.. Also,,they contrived/to .shut, off a good, deal of the public's view. Towards the' end of tho clay, things went from bad to worse, and the control seemed .to be exceedingly las.' . '"•-.•■ In the games, several remarkably fineperfdrmitmies, wSra rtcdi'ded.. Hilly the Auckland long-distance, runner, went out in , thethree-rnilo event to'win as c'qnifdrtably as he cotfld without running, himself outvQvidoritly-.with" the object of saving himself fort ha two-mile distance ;later' hi the day. : His only opponents in. the-, championship were- (N.Z.) and; U. Bamford (N.S.W.), but neither of themwere serious rivals. The two; New Zealanders paced each other .comfortably; until, when halt' a mile frtini homo, Hill left his companion, , lapjiod Bamford, and finally romped home an r easy winnef in ISmin. <(S 4-55<ic. Pugh was nearly 200 .yards behind, and ho also lapsed Bamford, so. that the New Sohth Wales man' was hopelessly but df it. -It was in tho two-mile handicap' that Hill', Start-, itig from scratch,' put up his best performance of the meeting. . He , covered his first half-mile in 2min. 18sec.r one mile in 4min. 37500., ono mile and a half in 7min. lOsec.,- and the fnll distance in 9min. 30 l-ssec. It was only last Friday that Hill established a fresh New Zealand recorl for the distance of 9min. 36 3-ssec., cutting 5 3-sscc. off Simp--eon's time. He has now cliijped.6 2-ssec. from' his own. previous best,, and establishe'd a record, which' will probably stand, for many years. His performance is the more meritorious in that he had practically-' nothing but the ' watches against him, for he caught.all his field at a, mile ari<T a half, aiid ran his last half alone. He .finished stronjly, as he' always does, 1 and was hot at all distressed by his .effort. '■ , . , Another, -record, which.looks safe from everybody', but himself, tfas Established by li. H. Kelly, the brilliant younfj Victorian high jumper. He scarcely showed his true form the .previous day, for the best he conld do was sft. Bjin., hut in the handicap event yesterday he cleared Gft. 1 S-16i1i., thus beating his own. Austra- , lasian record by 15-16 in- Kelly flew fully two inches over the bar, but when tho height was raised to ■ Gft. 3in. ho failed to get as good a jump, and his record stands "as stated.- Tlnfortnnately the other; Victorian,'; Erie Russellj-had broken down aaid he did not compete. Yet .another record was broke'n by-,H., E. Kerr. in' .IHe three-mile walk cham-' pionsnip.';., r JCefr .cp'.vered- the.distance iin 21miri. 36 3-osec.,. bei'ting'"pdve i '.-Wilson's' New Zealand record of 21min. 37sec, ■which has stood since 1897. The Austra-. lasian Tecorji is 21min. 30 1-osec. His gait was never 6ri6e q-oestioned,. and. his most serious, rival ■ was D. Cashman, ofWellington, who. finished second. All the , competitors, eicept those disqualified, 'got under, the standard time of 23min. 15sec.
OpW tv'bn his third ctairipionship- for the meeting by beating all-comors comfdrtably in the 220 yards event. In his heat he was first qiit of the line, and was. .' never afterwards troubled, winning comfortably by,some five yards*. In the final, however, he was slow to befrin', ahd-Eedniond—one of the best men off the mark at the moc-tinß—made a clear break of two yards- which Opic had lo overhaul. (He had Eedmond safe at 170 yards and,' from/there, he- drew.farther. and farther ahead, winning finally , by , five yards. ■ ■ ■'.'.' It was a'foregone conclusion that, unless he was brought down, G. P. Koddell must win the 440 Hurdles Championship. The race proved farcical. Keddell established a lend at the first Irardlo, and making no mistaken, ran in the easiest of winners. 411 of the other three competitors fell once, one of (N.S.W.)—fell twice, and j>ave up the useless chase, and Hamilton (XZ;), tho only starter besides Keddell to finish, had fallen previously at tho secotid hurdle. The Half-mile Championship fell to W. G. Harding (N.Z.), who ran with the worst of luck in tho quarter the previous day, and still phased Opio home. In the "half" he took the lead afonce aild held it all the way, winning in the jnd by some" 30 yards. ' It is .reviorfoible that throughout tho .meeting New Zealand .competitors have not won n single championship in tho lielU evetits, and tlioy have won every race over every, distance. It was thought that L M..llTvay would hold the pole vault championship for New.Zealand but ho was beaten by John. Brake,- of 'Victona, who 'cleared 10ft, 9in., about, six inches more than he has over done beloro in competition or in'practice. Jl'lvav ]U3t failed ,(at lOfl. 9in.. clearing. 10ft6m. E.
