THE MAWSON EXPEDITION'

DOINGS ON MACQUARIE ISLAND. By Teleer&ph—PreM Association—OoDTrleb* (Rec. December 28, 1.25 a.m.) Hobarl, December 27. The steamer Toroa has returned from Macquarie Island, tho depot of the Maweon Antarctic expedition, and has brought up the captain, the crew, and tho hatches of tho schooner Clyde, which was wrecked on the island, and also a quantity of oil and somo sails. These, with other salvage—though very littlo was saved— are to be shipped to New Zealand. The Clyde went ashore early in the morning, drifting close in, and tho crew reached the land safely and with little difficulty. Uy the Toroa Dr; Mawson sent an interesting account of" the doings of the party on the island. They found sea kopards, sea. elephants, penguins, giant petrels, Maori .hens, and wild cats in abundance. Fish was plentiful, and they had no difficulty iu obtaining abundant food supplies. Fifty-five sheep wero landed from the Toroa, and there was plenty of feed, in the form of long grass and circular cabbage, with which the island is densely clothed. ' The expedition's wireless station was erected on a headland several hundred feet above the sea level.
