0 NOTES AND COMMENTS, (By GhssjokJ The Conqueror niare, Emma, will prol> ably start in both sprint hack races al Carterton to-day, for the class engaged is somewhat poor, and over such suofl courses a good beginner such as Emma ii uis a pronounced advantage. Our Auckland correspondent telegraph; that nothing definite was known lasi ■ evening as to whether Sir George Clifford would start oho or both of his representatives in the Auckland Cup. Peoplt who are usually well informed on such matters nrc of opinion that only one will start, and that that one will be Counterwit. On thq other hand, several hold that overythinsi points to the colt being the runner. Ho won the C.J.C. Derby, beating Counterfeit, and later ran second to Vice-Admiral in tho Canterbury Cup. Form, therefore, points to him hemp the better of the pair over two miles. Further, the filly has some very valuable weight-for-age engagements later on, and she may be reserved for tliese. Sedition has been withdrawn from the Auckland Clip, having struck himself badly on Wednesday last. Local racing folks will have tho choice of two meetings to-day, as both the TaTatahi and Awapuni courses are easily accessible by rail, and tho return journey can be made on the same evening. Tho Hutt-fcrained Indra will be a runner in tho Trial Plate at Carterton today. The Renown filly has been a disappointment so far, but sbo is expected to snow up well when next she starts. Sir Knos will be ridden by a professional jockey in the Hack Race at the Wairarapa gathering to-day. The goodlooking chestnut is sure to start a pronounced favourite. , At latest advices from Auckland Equltas was doing well ia her work, and was a sure starter in the Railway Handicap to-day. She and Eyron are tho favourite selections, and outsido this pair anything will pay a good price. Ermengarde has done really well since being taken to Ellerslie. ThV Highden two-year-old filly will be the favourite selection for the Great Northern Foal Stakes to-day, but may still pay a good ?nc«, for the northerners are extremely loyal to their own horses (so tolegra-ohs our correspondent).
