AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. In the programme of the Australasian championship meeting this aftcrucon there are six championship events, and numerous handicap events to be decided. Tho .chanipiqaships are: 100 yds.,. high jump, one mile run, 120 yds. hurdles, putting the shot, and the half-mile run. while heats for the '440 yds. will also bo run. Since their arrival here most of the visitors have been eeoii in action, and the opinion expressed is that each 'State is represented by exceptionally good competitors and, in most cases, the contests are likely to be keenly fought out. In the 100 yds. Ronwick, Opie, Burton, Troup, and 'Redmond aro all first-class men- and in the best of form, and one of the best races yet.seen in that scries is expected to result. Hill appears to be likely to score-in both the.distance events. Kerr, who was thought to have both the. walks at his mercy,. is apparently not to havo any easy victory, judging from last Friday's performrtnee, when Ellis, of Tasmania, finished ahead of the Dominion representative off scratch. None of the competitors are likely to seriously trouble Kelly in the high 'jump except his co-representative, Russell, who may not start in tho event. In practice Kelly has had no difficulty" at all in reaching sft. lOin., and appears likely ,to exceed (!ft. He , is also ,a remarkably good quartermile runner, , ".and.may, annex that event. Most of the champions have entered for the handicap events, which adds considerably to tho interest.iii these contests. Many, competitors from other parts of the Dominion ; have also' arrived to compete in the handicaps. Givenfino weather,. over the two days the meetin" should prove one of the most successful ever held in the Dominion.
