A CHALLENGE TO THE GOVERNMENT. The following challenge 011 behalf of the Jersey breed as against Government Holsteius" uud imported lllnwarru rattle is published in the "Auckland Weekly News", by Mr. A. Huchanan, of JerseyHolm, Palmerston North :— "Since the Government is advertising. the merits •of their. Wereroa State farm cattle, they will proljably bo willing' to join'in, a friendly demonstration with' breeders of other dairy cattle. J therefore challengo theni to arrange for a : year's contest, with - animals fed 011 grass only, ill the same field or - The conditions, otherwise should be. ;on these ■lines. Stud cattle - only "to compete and each owner entering to supply a inaturo cow, and a three-year-old, and a two-year-old heifer. Bntterfat and casein and whey to be calculated at actual value. The trio furnishing the greatest value, to bo accounted the winners. Each owner must forfeit 25 guineas; which is to be allocated to 0110 or other, of tho public hospitals of the Dominion. The first-prize winner to have the option of saying to which .hospitalthe first fifty guineas will •be handed, and so on with the second prize mail allocating. the third deposit. With twenty, competitors, the .hos- . pitnls should benefit to tho extent of . one: thousand . guineas (Government bonus added)." If accepted tho above, "try out" would bo a practical test, and would .in somo degree solve ' the question as to which is. the best breed of cattle for. dairy farmers, viz., which breed will give the maximum return for the minimum cost.
