Baroness Amherst of Hackney, who is one of England's grande dames, is better remembered as Lady William Cecil. She will go down in history as having plaved so important a part in the early life" of Queen Victoria Eugenie, for it'was she who was deputed formally to hand over the bride-elect, on the ove of her marriage, to the great Spanish ladies who were henceforth to form her household. The story, goes that Lady Amherst had a tearful timo of it, Princess Ena breaking down and sobbing bitterly at.the: idea of being taken chargo. of by the formidable crowd of stately Spaniards who were all strangers to her..
