Mr. Jas. Jacobs, chief steward of the Mapourika, is resigning his position to enter.business ashore. Advice received by the local agents of the New Zealand Shipping Company is to the effect that the Orari' arrived at Port Said on December 18. The s.e. Defender is to sail for Picton and Hokitika to-day at noon. _ It seems certain that shipping fares and freights will be raised in New Zealand in the near future (says ;thb "Press"). Tho Australian companies have increased their charges by.s. per.cent..to cover increased expenditure aa a result of improved wages to .the seamen, and as the-snipping firms domiciled in the Dominion are being pressed from various quarters to increase the wages' of officers, seamen, and waterside workers,' the ultimate effect of it all is almost sure to be a rise in the prices charged to the.public.
