ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
ROME TEACK WOEK. Most of the visiting athletes to compete at the Australasian championship meeting nest week were seen at work on tho tracks at the Basin yesterday. The Inen were, not oil well on the way over, and they have scarce found their land legs after the rough crossing. None of them did much fast work, Dut the few .fast runs showed thai the sprinters in the teams aTe beautiful movers, and the few outsiders' ■ who were looking on ' ware quite satisfied that the fast men have coine here to do things. The tipsters say now .the New Zealanders have very little chance of winning either the 100 or the 220 sprints. ' ■ The balance of the Victorian team, sad all_the Tasmanians arrive, to-day by the TJlimaroa inward from Melbourne, via Hobart, Bluff, and southern ports. ■ There is some doubt as to whether J. L. Davis, the hurdle champion, is to ai> nvß or not. When the last Sydney boat left -it was thought there was no hope_ of his getting away from his university studies, but, from a cable message received on the following day in Wellington, it would appear- that the champion had decided after all to compete. ■■_. If this is correct, Davis will at. nvcl to-day with the Tasmanians. This afternoon at five o'clock the visitors are to be tendered a welcome by th» Mayor at tho Town Hall (Concert Chamber). . The visitors will. be present at i „ e ™ mn ? sports meeting at the Basin at 6.30, where probably some of them may be seen in aotion. POET NICHOLSON A.A.C. The Port Nicholson A.A.C. are holding an evening sports meeting on the Basin Eeserve to-day at 6.30. There is no charge for admission. Practically all the New South Wales, the Victorian, and the Queensland athletes, who will be .competing next week in tho Australasian championships, will bo competing. G. N; Hill will attempt the two-mile New Zealand record. E. Opie, another of the New Zealand team, is competing in the 100 yards. IfEETING OF THE LOCAL CENTEE.
