Early iu the morning several light showers fell, but the rain cleared after tho : first race, and thence onwards Ihe - events - -were run in glorious weather. The attendance was good, but would have been considerably larger had there bopn a ,tr.ain to Wellington at l-ho conclusion of the racing.

Everything went off well. The now grandstand, which is capable of seating several hundreds of people, is ncaring completion.* The starter (Mr. T. Cameron) gave-a finished display at the harrier, and the secretary (Mr. A. Hnlhaway) had all details well up. The stewards met after the Welter event to hear a complaint laid' by J. Miller, rider of Negative, alleging interference on the part of W. Young, rider of Afterthought. After investigating tho mailer k was decided to lake.no action, the evidence being deemed insufficient. Taonui and Peroneal were the public fancies in the Trial Stakes. Tho former ran badly, and was not sighted on tho voyage, but the 2-year-old was always on hand,, and coming away in the straight she won very easily from Lord Renown, w-ho paid a very big price for second place. Lord Palmer was third, just clear of Inveran and The Diver. Tho latter pair had made alt the early running. Lady Laddo and Over-rale mopped up the favouritism in tho Telephono Hack Race and, of the others, Rongoimtu was the best backed. At the start the Poxton mare was chopped out, and went back to last, but she made up lier ground quickly and . entering tho straight was as good as the leaders. Here Overrate rail wide, and look Lady Laddo with him. the pair next took charge and in a good finish, Lady Laddo won bv half a. length. Rongomau camo very fast, and got third place.

A surprise came about in tho Flying Handicap, when Te Kahurangi scored by u narrow margin from Jloree. Pull Rate gave his customary bit of bother at tho barrier, but, as in other events, Air Cameron succeeded m effecting a perfect dispatch. Blue Lake led) from Purakau and le Ijahurangi, but, at the turn for home, To Kahurangi moved up. In (he long straight he held his own well, and, though Morcu cam.; fast, she was unable to quite get up. Blue Lake was a poor third, while.two well-backed horses—Pull Kate and .Merry Prank—wore beaten off Tha winner was offered for salo to a Melbourne buyer recently, but tho deal fell through. In the Cup, Aberbrothock successfully "came back," winning by a couple of lengths. The race resolved itself into ono of tactics, Jenkins bciug opposed bv several, inexperienced lads. From a good start tho Held' was bunched round the first, turn,; and then First Consul and Sir Solo rushed to the front, and put a big break on the field, which was whipped in by Awha. Across the. bottom Jenkins moved up on the top weight, and, though there were.still three furlongs to go, the whips were out on tho other pair. Halfway down the running Aberbrothock took charge, .and, going on fnll of running, ho won comfortably. It was a great race for second place. Sir Solo, Royal Marine,- and Awha finishing in a line. After p-issin" the post the rider of Sir Solo fell off but was not injured. It appears that ho broke his leather soon after the start and was thus at a disadvantage throughout the race. Tho winner appeared to be. surprisingly forward in condition, anil his trainer has him in better feltlo than I could have been-expected. Negative, who had an engagement later in the dav, was tho only withdrawal. _ Sir Knox was at a very short price in (he Ladies in which an outsider turned up. This was the brown maro Nodra, who is at present very well seasoned, and she finished very strongly. The Diver and Jackman made" the early running from Sir-Knox, who was hustled the whole way, and not given time to get on his feet. Half way down the running tho leaders compounded, and Sir Knox was left in front. His rider apparently thought tho issue was beyond doubt and eased bis mount, and just at that moment Nodra came with a late rush and won by a length. After the race Mrs. (.'. V. Vall.inee presented Ihe rider (!•'. B. Vallancc) with a gold-mounted whip. The win was a popular one, -and cheers greeted (he winner at the presentation ou the lawn. A favourite' scored in the next event— the .\la.,tertiili Hack Handicap. This was Odessa, who 'was meeting a particularly weak field. K'opane led at the slart. but after going three furlongs Odessa rushed Ui tho front, and from this out Ihe race was a procession. Overrate was second, this making the third similar place for horses trained by It. Knox. This iorsc was very lame after the race, and may not hi able to fulfil next week"s engagements. The finest finish of the dav was witncssed in the Open Welter event, when Eclogue and Bally Shannon, belli of whom were nnlnncied. finished in a line after being lucked together over I ho last furlong. ■ Xegaliv'r and Undecided wore (.lis l«sf bucked horses, and, with Afterthought, Uicy made, the pare .(ill thr straight x« reached, Then ljcicgue ran

through on the rails, and was quickly joined by Bally Shannon. Tho pair then drew out ahead, and in a hard finish the judge was unable (o separate the pair. The concluding event went to Ladv Laddo. who was ucnaliscd 71b. for her win earlier in the day. Tho favourite Emma, made dm running to the turn, where Lady Laddo collared her, and wou casilv.
