MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

BACKCIOCKER AND HIS CHEQUECITY ADVENTURE. . • A young woman, named Isabella Harrington, alias Bain, appeared on remand (o answer a charge of theft of £ 120, the property of George Barrett. Along with the female accused, u young man, named Henry Hihliteh, was charged with receiving the sum of Ml Is. . 9d.,. well knowing it lo have been stolen.. Chiefllotective Broberg prosecuted, but neither of tho accused was represented' by counsel. . ttriefly, tho evidence was that Geo. Bairett arrived in the city from Whauganiomomi on Tuesday night, and made tho acquaintance of tho fcinalo accused about 11 p.m. They had supper tope tnor, and afterwards went to the Clvdo Court Hotel. Barrett was irador the'fnjluenee of liquor when he retired, and left about Xl2O in ■ one of his pockets, lho money was gone when he awoke in the morning, and he informed tho police. Later in the day Detectives Kemp and Knwle arrested both accused, and subsequently recovered Ml Is. 9d. from a man named Bird, with' whom Hilditch had deposited it for safe keeping. On being formally charged, both accused pleaded guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. •TWELVE MONTHS AT EOTOROA. 'John David Speight was placed, in tho dock for sentence on charges of (1) drunkermt.ss, (2) resisting Constable Bates, and (3) damaging a glass panel valued at 12s. 6d.,'the property of A. H. Cock. He had pleaded guilty to the three charges on tho previous morning. On the first charge, accused was declared an habitual inebriate, and ordered to be placed in the Inebriates' Homo at Itotoroa Island for a period of twelve months. On Rich of the•other charges accused was convicted and discharged. . DISORDERLY • BEHAVIOUR. ' Between 7 and 8 o'clock on Wednesday evening, it was. reported to the Mount. Cook police that n man was behaving in a disorderly' manner in Jessie Street. Constable Buttorworth went to the scene, and arrested a man named Wm. Stevens, but not before the latter had given considerable trouble. Yesterday Stevens was charged, with: (I)' Disorderly' behaviour' while drunk; (2) resisting Constable Buttenvoi'th; and (3) with damaging the constable's wearing apparel. For the first offence Stevens was fined 205., and for the second a fine of 40s. was imposed. In regard' to; tho third offence, lie was ordered to make good tho damage, 21s. Default was fixed at 11 days'-imprisonment. THEFT FROM EMPLOYER. Benjamin Norman Campbell, who had previous convictions recorded against him, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £1 os. Gd. from his employer, a settler at tho Lower Hutt. He was fined 405., and ordered to refund the stolen monoy, ,in default seven days' imprisonment. REMANDS GRANTED: 'A remand till Saturday. (for sentence) was made in the case of George Ludlow' Logan, who pleaded guilty to a charge' of stealing a quantity of wearing apparel, valued at .£1 18s. Bail was allowed in the sum. of, ,£lO and one .surety' of' £10. -.' A youth named 'Geo'rgo Cecil Coleman, charged with stealing a postal packet at Kelson, was, on'the application of ChiefDetective Broberg, remanded to appear at the Magistrate's Court, Nelson, tomorrow. OTHER CASES. ' . Harry Swanson was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, while, for, pro-
curing liquor during the currency of a prohibition urder in force against him. lie was fined 10s. The alternative was sovon days' imprisonment. On a ciiargo of insobriety, Patrick Rice, against whom there were several previous convictions, was lined -!os., with the option of seven days' imprisonment. A prohibtion order was issued against him.
