THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
EXPANDING AND IMPROVING OUTPUT. The output of tho hemp mills in the principal.- manufacturing centreythe Mauawatu district—exhibited a considerable', advance last .month, while the quantity of hemp was appreciably bettor in practically iill branches of the woilc of milling.' So says Mr. W. H. Ferris, Government .Hemp Grader, in the course of an article on tho hemp industry in the December number of the "Journal" of the Department of.'Agriculture A l'oxtpn miller sent forward .a .".superior" line; the first time this grade has l/ccireached in that .section; The principal improvement noticeable has been iu stripping, washing, and strength. The dominant weakness has been in the scutching,' with .the result that the fibre has not been. as free from vegetable matter as it should' have been, n weakness which is the causo of more complaiut from the trade than all other defects. Only in a few cases were the tcbjeetionablc towballs'removed. Milling in the Wairarapa. says Mr. Ferris, is taking a new lease of life. V'our. mills are in operation, and are turning out a decent, fibre —a "fair" grade. , Tho leaf available is not in good enough order to permit of.the profitable milling of a higher grade. ■ '
