Hastings, December 18.— A lonpt spell of dry weather, acoompanied by violent winds, Was broken to-day by very welcome Ehowers. Palmereton, December 18.—Very heavy rain fell during Sunday night, and again to-day. The wind has changed to southerly, and is very cold. Hon-ell.—This year's census of Canada gave the population as 7,100,000, as against 5,370,000 at tho census of 1901. It was expected in Canada that the total would reach 8,000,000, and there has been much dissatisfaction at th 6 result, and investigation has been ordered by the Government into charges of scamped work by tho census-takers.
