Jordan, hairdresser and tobacconist, Charles Xmvman and George Mason— the ttvo laii-iuimcd being formerly bookmakers, and warned oil" racecourse*—were charged with making bets in Timaru on event? at (ho late November mcetim;. The chief v.ituc'.ss. Edward Truvis O'Hrien, probationer constable from Christchurch, <ra\e evidence to the effect that Jordan had made a. bet ivilh him in his shop, Xetiman in the. street, and Mason in.a hotsi. Jordan's case wjs adjourned (ill day, in order'to obtain the fvidenca of Smith, a saloon assistant, who did not appear when.called, and a warrant nas ordered for his arrest. The decision on tho other two cases was reserved till Wednesday.
