In tho chargo against Francis Henry Page, William Henry Glcndining, and Frederick Marsliail, at Bow Street Police Court, of blackmailing tho Countess Hamil Deinain of .MOO, the money being obtained under threat that certain letters by a Dan O'Connor (lato.of Sydney) and one Dubbio would bo published to licr annoyance, cvidenco was given to the effect that Glcndining and Pago demanded .61000, but eventually reduced the amount to .£IOO. Cross-examining counsel asked if O'Connor was a very impecunious man. The Countess replied that ho' had .£3500 a year when she first knew him, and lio might liavo part of that now. The magistrate later intervened, and f aid tho.whole cross-examination was directed to throwing mud. Counsel angrily dissented, and a scene ensued. Th« magistrate eventually ordered an adjournment.
