MARIST BROS.' SCHOOL

ANNUAL CONCERT AND PRIZEGIVING, Tho annual concert nnd prizo-giving of tho Marist Bros.' School in Tasiuau Strict was held at tlio Town Hall last evening, there being a very large attendance of the parents and friends. Among thosa present wero Archbishop Redwocd and a number ol' the Roman Catliolio clergy. I'ho concert was a very successful one, the majority of the items on the programme being contributed by tho school pupils. Tho St. June's Drum and Fifo Band played the overture music, and' choral items wero contributed by th« singing class, tho junior pupils, St. Mary, of t the Angels Choir (which gave an ail-, mirable interpretation of the "Soldiers' Chorus" from Gounod's "Faust"), and a sextet of boys, who sang tho partsong, "Ring out Wild Bolls." Solos and recitations were contributed by J. Gamble, M. Burke, L. Andrews, P. L. Minifio, F. Gritliu, and F. Reeves; F. Corry and G. Davis contributed a dialogue, "Tho Boardinghouso Lodger"; an attractive tableau, "Adcsto Fideles," was arranged by Miss Gamble; an exhibition of dumbboll drill was given by the junior -pupils; an instrumental quartet, by B. O'Brien and 0. Kovalcoski (violins), L. Carroll (piccolo), G. Davis (cornet), and J. Burke (piano). Tho entertainment concluded with u farce, entitled "Tho Midnight. Intruder," tho caste consisting of Mr, Timid (nervous householder), F. Corrrj Jenny (housemaid), B. Hart; Zeb Hill (friend of Jenny), L. Ryan; Saui Sommerville (friend of Jenny), D. Haggerly; Statue, D. Hart; Burglar Bill, L. An. drews. Miss M. Duggan played tho accompaniments, Tho annual report on tho work of the school year stated that tho new school in T'asman Street, a fino substantial building, was eminently suitablo for its purpose. Tho school opened in January with 170 pupils, but within a few weeks this number was increased to 220. The total number admitted during tho- year wai 265, of whom 50 belonged to tho Newtown parish. At tho Government Inspector's examinations, thirty were presented il) Standard VI, and of these 27 6Ucoeeded in passing, 20 of them gaining proficiency and tho other seven competency certificates. Ono boy was successful in gaining a Junior National Scholarship, whilo two gained Education Board Scholarships. Recently a beginning was made with a school library.. On the sports field tin boys also distinguished themselves. Playing Association football, A team won tha challenge cup and a set of medals, and the B team wero runners up in their grade. In tho schools competition, A team secured, first, place, tho Thistle Cup, and a set of medals, whilo B team got into second place and earned another set of medals.
