Campbell, tho Reform candidate for Hawke's Bay, was received with tremendous enthusiasm in Hastings. As the first returns came to hand there was a brief period of suppressed _ eicitemeut, and then as it became evident that the favourite was forging to the front, the scene became one of pleasurable anticipation to the bulk of tho waiting crowd. When Mr, Campbell's lead approachcd a thousand, and tho contest was practically over, tho successful' candidate appeared on the balcony of the Pacific Hotel. His appearance was the signal for prolonged checring. Mr. Campbell's speech was, as is usual with him, marked by brevity, the utmost good taste, and a thoroughly friendly feeling towards his opponents. Having made his spccch, he came out into the street, and was immediately seized upon by his supporters, and carried shoulder high. Tho scene which followed .was most remarkable in the enthusiasm displayed. _ Tho candidate was carried shoulder high up and down tho Main Street, amid tumultuous checring. Later tho defeated candidate, Mr. iL lan Rimson, snoke from tho Grand Hotel balcony. He gave a manly address, and promised to acain offer his services at the next eleciion, which ho anticipated would tnko placo within tho next twelve months. As outsido returns came to hand tho victories of tho Reform party were enthusiastically received. and there was a most demonstrative outburst whoti the win of Mr. F. M. B. •Fisher was screened. Elsewhere in this feue, Mr. A. H. Hindmarnh returns thanks to the electors of Wellington South for their support at Thursday's poll. Mr. R. A.
