Wood moved: "That this Presbytery expresses the deepest satisfaction at the growth of (he Temperance sentiment and opinion, as shown by fhe iinmomo majority east for National Prohibition at the recent poll." He said that the National Prohibition vole had come as a grateful surprise, in view of the strenuous efforts made against the reform in many quarters. Tho handwriting was on the wall, so far as the liquor trade was concerned ii! New Zealand. Tho motion was seconded by fhe Kov. J. J. Bates, who said that tho largo vole for restoration in Ashburton was due to the fact that tho electors had been' flooded with" outsiders. The Ashburton poll had been stuffed, and he had it on very good authority that it had been stuffed. When he recently visited Aslilmrlori he saw a number of "stoney brokes" about tho town, and in the Domain. The licv. Dr. Krwin expressed his pleasure at the high polling for National Prohibition, and said that efforts must; be concentrated oii obtaining, if not the bare majority, at least; the .'>s per cent, majority which many candidates and members appeared to be willing to concede. The . attempts made, to explain away the National Prohibition vote were amusing, and the weakest and most futile was that contained in a leader in the "Press," in which it was argued that the electors were confused bv the issues, and voted in error. Surelv, errors of that kind would not be confined to electors who intended to vote against National Prohibition. The LVv. U. Wood said that the advertisements of the liquor trade and statements of its paid representative" had been Midi insults to the. intelligence of the people that they had tremendously assisted tho Prohibition cause.
