MOKAU MATTERS.
SETTLERS WANT AX INQUIRY.

A meeting was held at Awakino (o consider the lnnttor of the Mokau land transaction. Mr. Irednlo was voted to the chair, and most of the settlers of the Jlokau and Awakino district wero present. After discussion, tho following resolutions were passed:— (1) That this meeting of settlers of Hi ft Mokau district, who hove local knowledge of the circumstances connected with the acres of the Mokau Block, linv. iiiff read a report of a public meeting held at Palnierston North and addressed by Mr. U'Nah, desire to refute tho elalcmc-nts made by that gentleman, and also desire to express their entire disapproval of the action of the Government in allowing Crown lands to bo taken' up without public notice by a private speculator at ss. 10d. per acre, and they further desire that «u inquiry be held as to the legality of tho notion. '
(i) That Mr. M'Nob's statement that the land had not been handed to the company at ss. lOd. per acre was a distortion of (act, <is Mr. Jl'Nab was. awaro that the lond had been handed to a private speculator at that price, and resold to tho company at a profit immediately.
