HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was .held last evening, and was attended by tho_: Mayor (Jlr. Bunny), and Councillors Knight, btephenson, Kenipthonic, Hodgins, Hoots, liobbs, Ball, Clcndon, and Hawthorn. ..■ Mrs. E. Callcnder wrote stating that, in reference to .1 gas service in William Street, only two owners vrero prepared to immediately connect witn tho now service, but u third would do it lit somo future date. Mrs. Callender thereiotre asked the council to cancel her application for gas. After somo discussion _it was resolved to proceed with the laying of the gas main. Mr. I'. Lyall complained of tho condition of the drainage to his premises. —Referred to the engineer for report. H. Driscoir was the successful tcuderor for the supply of dog-collars. Thu Hut: Fire Brigade asked for certuin repairs to the Alicetown station. Instructions were given to effect these. Tho brisado wero also granted the use of the reeiWion ground for sports on tho second ■ Saturday in February. At tho invitation of the council, members of the firs brigado attended the meeting to discuss a recent fire. Councillor Clcndon stated that it was a serious matter. Life had been lost, and ho thought that a committee should be set up (to act with tho brigade) with a view to ascertaining if all materials wero up to diite. Mr. Baldwin, secretary of the brigade, said that he would iiUo to see an electric bell installed so that the Alicetov.u and main bell would ring simultaneously.
Councillors Hawthorn, Ball, ari4 ; Clond6n were appointed-to inquire into the matter. In reply to Mr. Baldwin, the' Mayor stated that there was no complaint with reference to tho efficiency of tho brigade. The conference had been arranged solely to inquire into the equipment.
Dr. Purdy (at the suggestion of the council) that his opinion on ice cream was favourable, provided that it was made- properly, and there >ras provision for inspection. The clerk' was instructed to write to the secretary of the Hutt Valley Tramway Board ' asking when tho affairs : 6f that body would be ivound up.'
It ■ was resolved • to meet on December 18, and that tho staff holidays should commenco on December 23, and extend to January 7.
The engineer's ordinary report was submitted.
